2025: “Challenges and latest tools for forest planning and management in the 21st century” – an inspiring NFZ Summerschool in Nancy

26 junior scientists from internationally and professionally diverse fields came together in Nancy for an intensive week of further education in forest planning from the 25th to the 29th of August. They benefited from lectures by experts from France, Germany and Switzerland.

Forest cover and forest ecosystem service provision are fundamentally challenged by uncertainties, further increased by climate change. The research presentations and discussions prompted participants to engage in questions such as “How will or how should forests look like in the future? How can forest planning and management contribute to sustain forests and their uses?”

Further focal points laid on critical perspectives on different stakeholder interests in forest governance and multi-risks management as well as the active use and suitability of various models, simulations and innovative forest planning methods and tools. Practical examples ranged from remote sensing and monitoring to the governance of common resources and citizen science. Finally, a field trip to the forest of Verdun (Forêt d’Exception®) was organized in order to experience and discuss the newly gained theoretical insights in the forest.

Our aim to advance every participant’s potential to contribute to robust forest management planning in the future has thus been achieved and we are looking forward to the next NFZ Summerschool in 2026.
