August 19 to 24, 2018 in Davos / Switzerland, hosted by the SwissForestLab and WSL.

Forests are the most important terrestrial carbon sink, and carbon sequestration is one of the central services they provide. However, global change jeopardizes their ability to store carbon.

Moreover, trees as renewable natural resources have a high potential in contributing to transition to fossil-free energy systems. However, there might be trade-offs between the extensive use of forest for reducing human CO2 emissions and their ability to store carbon.

As a consequence, the role of forest ecosystems for the global carbon balance needs to be addressed from complementary angles: forest functioning and forest dynamics on the scientific level, sustainable forest management practices on the applied level, as well as the economic, societal and political framework.

The SwissForestLab/NFZ summer school 2018 aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the carbon balance of forest ecosystems, the role of soils in carbon storage, the impact of management on carbon sequestration taking into account the socio-economic and political boundary conditions. Experienced researchers in forest science will explore the possibilities and limits of disciplinary and interdisciplinary concepts in their field.

The summer school will take place from August 19 to 24, 2018 in Davos, eastern Switzerland, with the possibility to visit the Davos-Seehornwald research site (class 1 site of the Integrated Carbon Observation System ICOS).

The participants will reflect on their own scientific work with respect to other disciplinary methods and discuss possible benefits of interdisciplinary approaches in their field.

The Summer School is open to PhD students or young scientists in forest research and related disciplines from any country in the world.
